Ganghaus — the Scottish pairing of Rob Murray and Mike Lindsay — are the latest guests on Decoded Magazine’s Five on Friday series. The two school friends reconnected after lockdown, turning a hut, a hefty record collection and a mutual obsession into one of the more heartening stories to emerge from the scene north of the border.
Rob Murray’s relationship with DJing stretches back to the early nineties, when it was all about vinyl, battered record bags and every spare penny vanishing into shops like Sleeves in Kirkcaldy. No internet, no socials, no Shazam — just long drives, pirate radio, all-night parties and sets at spots like Calton Studios and The FUBAR alongside Tom Wilson, ZBD and Technotrance. Life eventually put the records into storage, but the music never left.
After lockdown, a reunion with Mike Lindsay pulled everything back into focus. Mike, a newer arrival behind the decks, had no trouble disappearing down the rabbit hole of digging. He’s since become a familiar face at events around Edinburgh, Dundee and Glasgow, with NSA standing out on his annual calendar.
For their Five on Friday, Rob’s selections include Johnny Aux – Supersonic (Chez de Milo Remix), a stripped-back acid workout that the duo call a Ganghaus favourite, and Ebi – San, a track where nothing is overdone and the groove simply pulls you in.
