Moby turned his headline set at On The Beach Brighton into a heartfelt history lesson this weekend, stepping away from the decks to address the crowd directly. The American producer, long a devoted anglophile, used the moment to honour the country he believes gave birth to rave as we know it.
“I was such an anglophile,” he told the seaside audience, recounting how his obsession began with punk. He namechecked the Sex Pistols as his entry point before moving through the sounds that shaped him, eventually landing on the house and techno pioneers who transformed British nightlife. The speech culminated in a simple, powerful statement: “You invented rave culture.”
The tribute resonated deeply at a festival that has become a summer fixture for electronic music on the south coast. By weaving his personal timeline into the performance, Moby underlined the transatlantic debt American dance music owes to UK clubs, pirate radio and warehouse parties.
His set itself spanned the emotional, melodic techno and ambient textures he is known for, but it was the spoken interlude that turned the evening into a shared celebration of rave’s roots.
